does it support basic cable just bought new tv without QAm?

I use the iView with a 500GB HDD to record over-the-air HD programs from local TV stations. I really like the unit, but the remote is difficult to use. Since the iView has a QAM Tuner built-in,
I think it would be able to process Basic Cable signals.

Is this the 3500 STB or the 3500STBII?

The 3500STB I purchased is discontinued, but it should have lasted at least a year- which it didn't.

I just installed ny Time Warner digital conerter and now I cannot record on my VCR. It will play a tape. What's wrong?

Not sure how yours is configured, but if you use the analog coax OUT from the converter, or even the composite (left and right audio + video) - then INTO the VCR, it should record (albeit really old school) unless some other connection (component, S-Video, etc.), defeats that coax/composite signal. 
The days of programming your VCR are gone unless your are willing to have the converter channel dedicated for the recording (set it and forget it).

what is the tuner sensitivity?

I have found it to be decent.  As good as my Sony TV tuner and perhaps a bit better.

The box is required to convert a digital signal to analog (for TV) at Grand Valley State University.  GVSU indicates the box has to be 3500 STB and that 3500 STB II or 3500 STB III will not work.  Is this box a 3500 STB?

I have two of the newer iView-3500STBII that came in the Green and Red box. Look for the 3500STBII it has many improvements over the original 3500STB. (according to AVS Forums)

Is this what some call the 3500STB II model?

I don't know what the 3500STB I model would be, but my NewEgg ordered one is hardware version ATSC7816XD-01 and software version 20130806.  There is a newer firmware update available from iView with some fixes, but I haven't downloaded it.  The older firmware accepts more QAM channels apparently.

Overall the unit is nice except for the remote which only operates from about 4 feet away.  A universal remote will not work.  I like the USB movie playing and recording and the 1080p HDMI cable.

what is your best OTA  tuner box for digital TV.  My Samsung monitor does not have a tuner?

This never worked out of the box once delivered and Newegg refused to do anything about it.
