Question 1

Can this play mp3 CDs?  I see that it plays mp3s from auxiliary, but if I have a data CD in mp3 format, will it play it?

I just burned a data disk with some mp3 files, loaded the cd into the player and it started playing the songs, so it worked for me.

Note: The cd tray mechanism feels very stiff. Opening it is fine, but you have to push fairly hard to get it closed. Not much of a problem for me because I am mostly using the AUX input to feed it music from an "old" wall mounted tablet that provides access to music from the network storage device.

Question 2

I would like to see a photo of the back of this item.  Specifically, I need to know if I can add additional speakers to this.  Are there ports for more speakers?  Thanks!

There is just the auxillary port in the back. But, we have this set up in our 25' X 20' Great Room and the sound is very, very good. Even when my husband decides to "rock out". Hope this helps you in your decision!
