How reliable is the CD Player ?

As long as it is flat, the CD player is fine, once it is wall mounted, the CD can go through skips because it is perfectly vertical and the CD player works better when it's tipped back like when the stand is attached.

How do the speaker wires attach? With a proprietary plug or bare wire

It's a plug. If you don't have unreasonable expectations it's a great little radio to mount to the wall. We put it in the kitchen so we can plug in our mp3 players while we are cooking or having dinner.

The Radio/CD player is about 10.5" wide x 8.5" high x 3" deep. It has two detachable speakers that are 4.25" wide x 7" high x 2" deep. The whole unit can be mounted on a wall, or it can stand on a desk.
