I have an earlier imac with 1 gb.  2008 model I think.  It says it is 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM  Will this Kingston 4gb (2 x 2gb) work?

Should be fine. I believe this is the same (if not similar) model that I installed. You need at least 2 GB RAM to run OS 10.9 (Mavericks).

Works great so far (about 2 months).

Question 2

I have two 2 GB currently installed in my iMac, do /I need a 4GB only or do I need to buy these in a pair?

I believe you need to purchase them in a pair in order for them to work correctly in the iMac. I purchased them in a pair in July of last year and found them to be easy to install and booted up flawlessly. I have not had any problems since and found it improved the speed as I am running OSX 10.9.1. Hope you find this helpful.

From my experiences, I think this will work. I also own an iMac 2008, though it has an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8 GHz and started with 2 gb. I needed to upgrade to run Logic Pro X (music studio software), and this did the trick.
