what battery does this use? how long is the battery expected to last before replacing? thanks!

It takes a single cr2025 (standard coin battery). They say it should last a year before you have to care about it though the one that shipped with my kevo lock only lasted about 4 months before it died (maybe it was on the shelf a long time?)

Can I open/close the lock beyond the Bluetooth range?

Unfortunately not. There is no WiFi capability, either your phone or the fob have to be in range.
