Sadly, there is no built-in battery inside this external hard drive, it will have to be plugged in to access the data. I do apologize for this.

No, the Mini doesn't. Check out the Lacie website for specs. The next one up that has Firewire is the Triple....but I can't insert a link to it for you because newegg's mean like that. It will still be cheaper on newegg than Lacie.

Dave C, I have bought the LaCie Rugged Mini, But I wasn't sure how to answer your question, so I did a google search on FireWire 800 and found that lacie dot com has some information about FireWire 800 and the LaCie products. Yes. USB 3.0 is backwards compatible with all USB 2.0 parts. However, data transfer speeds will be limited to that of the USB 2.0 components.

We bought this for MacBook Pro to use with Time Machine.  Although before backing up, I set it up (via the software on the drive) to have all space allocated for OSX computers since that is all we work with.  You can partition it so that some of it will work with Windows (if you choose).  Good luck

Yes this drive will store all your photos,  tunes, work files if needed. You just need to direct the app you are using to save to this drive such as Itunes or Iphoto. Or you can drag and drop files to this drive. Great drive and work great for video as well.
