I need to know if Laview carries extended wiring for cameras that have to be placed at a longer distance than what comes with the LV-KD3468B system I ordered?

Question 2

As it is shipped in the box, what does it record to if I do not fill the 2 empty drive bays? So how big is the stock (supplied) storage area and what format is it recorded at.

It doesn't.  You have to add your own hard disk (up to 3TB x 2).  The format is h.264 ("dal" I think) but can be backed up (transferred) to a memory stick or other usb storage.  Even a external DVDR.  When you do this, it also adds a player to the memory stick.  You can transfer it to a AVI file, but this is not a normal AVI as windows will not play it.  But is a standard in CCTV DVR's.

Does this unit already have internal storage,or do you need to install
hard drives?

how are the cameras powered and are thet wired to the VCR?

The cable they provide routes power to the camera, it has dual functionality, the video feed and the power, there is a power supply that mounts near the DVR that each cable plugs into at that end...
There is no VCR, this is a DVR, they use BNC connectors to plug into camera and into the DVR, they make dongles that allow you to use Cat5 patch cables you can make yourself, sold on other sites, then you can extend the distance if needed to monitor other buildings on your property.

It claims 30 on all of them.  But what it dosen't mention is that only the first 2 channels are "D1"(720x480).  The other 14 are "CIF"(360x240).

If you mean the unit, camera or devices... NO! But the DVR is network installable [ISP] and software useable via [ISP]. The video on the sales page explains allot.
