I need to know if the system is black and white for the cameras or color ?

It turns automatically to B/W at night in order to increase its sensitivity at night. This model of camera doesn't have good night vision. It becomes useless at night. Avoid it.

How are the cameras powered?  Does each one require an a.c. adapter and a.c. outlet near where the camera is mounted?

There is a very long siamese cord included for each camera. On the camera end there is a bnc and power connecter that breakout from the cord. These both get plugged into the short (approximately 6") cord coming out of the camera. On the dvr end, once again the cord from each camera breaks out into a power connecter and bnc connector. One end of the cord is labeled "to camera" and the other end, "to dvr" so there should be no confusion here.

Now, for power, everything is located near the dvr. There is a wall wort for the dvr and two for the cameras. Each camera wall wort plugs into a quad breakout cord, about a foot long or so, which then receives the power connecter cord from each camera. As a result if you are using four or less cameras, you would need only one wall wort, however, for five or more cameras, you would have to use both camera wall worts. I don't have access to the unit right now, however, I would guess that at the dvr/power end of the camera cords, you have about 10" of cord separation between the bnc connector and power connector

Sadly they do not.  The DVR has audio input for one mic.

If I can't connect via cat5 cable (network) because of location, can I use a wireless adaptor? Thx.

From the manufacturer:

Q: Can this be connected to the internet using WIFI? I don’t have a LAN internet service provider just a WIFI hotspot.

A: The DVR has to be connected to a HUB or a Router via a CAT5 Cable. If your hotspot is an Aircard some routers have the option to connect the air card to it. These systems do not have WIFI built in.

Looks to me like that means no, perhaps a wifi extender or gaming adaptor would help, like where the extender gets a Wi-Fi signal and turns it into a cat5 port to plug the DVR into.

are the cameras wired? or wireless?

These are wired. Each camera come with a combination power/signal cable with 2 connectors on each end a BNC for the signal and a push plug for the power. Each cable is 60 ft long.

Question 7

How far can you run the camera cables and power them? My building is approximatly 1000 feet from my house where my router is. can I use 4 cameras in that building and 4 in the house?

You should call their customer support to be sure. I found them very helpful and they answered the phone right away each time.
I don't see why you couldn't run the video signal that far. It would help if you could plug the power adapter for the remote cameras closer to them if you have electricity in your building. The kit comes with 2 power adapters (one for each set of 4 cameras).

Can these be used outside or are the cameras only for indoor mounting?

The DVR for this unit presents a Telnet login prompt, but my username and password do not work for it. Does anyone know the login information for the telnet connection?
