Yes, you can use an external monitor.  This has a vga out jack to connect it to a monitor.

It is integrated into the CPU.  It is a pretty good gaming system. Plays Minecraft with no problems although you might not get the best performance on top end games...

All of the USB ports are 2.0.  The one USB that has the yellow port is a always powered on port.  The lack of USB 3.0 was my one concern, but a 3.0 express card could be added.  I had an application run 100% CPU while working on another VM and did not notice a problem with heat

Does this Laptop allow you to update to the free Windows 10 upgrade?

Yes. You need to authenticate the Windows 7 that comes installed by using the product number from the sticker on the back of the laptop. You can do this either using the internet (if you're connected) or by phone. It is automatic, quick and painless. Then you will start getting the nagware notices from Microsoft to "Click here" to upgrade to Windows 10. I did it after I had installed Office, network, printer drivers, etc. It was still quick and problem free. No issues with Windows 10 on the laptop yet, but it's only been a few days. Good Luck!

does this product have an RJ45 port? (needed for technical reasons)

YES. my unit came with an RJ45.  I tried internet with Ethernet cable and worked fine & fast. But for convenience I usually use wi-fi.  My T420 was like new. What made the biggest improvement on my T420 is installation of a 240GB AData SSD I got from Newegg.  Now T420 boots in less than 5 seconds in Win 10.  Internet connections a lot faster.

Does it come with one stick of 4 gig ram? I want to upgrade to 8, so wondering if I need to buy 2x 4 gig chips, or just one extra 4 gig stick. Thanks

Yes, with a light and microphone. It seems to work all right with Skype, but I'm not sure if it came with any independent software, especially since mine was a refurbished.
