How loud / hot running is it? I have tried some older enterprise gear, but that sounds like a 747 on take off roll, and pumps out too much heat.

I have four Seagate Constellations in mine, and they run about as warm as they do in a desktop case. The ix4 is cooled with an 80mm fan which is about as loud as an average generic computer case; it could likely be changed for a quieter one if it's too loud. I don't find it obtrusive at all.

Can this NAS read 4TB drives? If so, can the NAS hold up a total of 16TB? (4 4TB Drives)?

Yes. Please make sure you get the supported drive type. I recommend the WD RED edition. I was least of all the DOA reviews, but had no problems with mine.
