Can I play a dvd on this machine with an external dvd player plugged in?

Yes you can. You will need an external USB dvd reader/writer. By the way we returned this laptop. It's wifi reception is the worst possible. Also it for not come with any warranty. When we called Lenovo to ask for help with the wifi (all our other devices at home have wonderful reception) they wanted us to pay them $70 for the call!!! Basically the product comes with no warranty included decpite what they advertise. Instead we bought Asus laptop and after that all our purchases are Asus. Not only they have a solid 2 year warranty but we actually had an issue with one of them and we learned that we do not even need to pay for the shipping. They sent us an email with a pdf Fedex label, we shipped it to them and they returned it quickly fixed. Buy an Asus and save yourself alot of hradache. Thanks to Newegg by the way for letting us return the no-warranty joke of a laptop from Lenovo and standing behind our rights as a consumer.

Hi,

I read a bunch of reviews on this Lenovo U310 and how it has horrible wifi connectivity.  Has this issue been resolved by Lenovo yet?  I haven't found any recent info on the problem (mostly it's from 2012 or 2013).  I would really like to get this laptop but I can't afford to have bad wifi because it will be my primary work computer.

I haven't experienced any significant WiFi issues, no more than any other laptop.  I have had a failure of the SSD, however, which just slows it down a bit and causes some boot warnings until you disable Intel Rapid Start/Storage.  It's in repair with Lenovo right now, getting the SSD replaced.  All in all it's been a very good laptop.  Very solid, nice and thin and light.

I believe 4GB is the max. Great laptop otherwise.

can this be updated to 802.11AC?

You can replace the wireless module in the laptop, but it would be far easier to get a USB wireless AC adapter.

Hello,
Does anyone know if Windows gets installed on the SSD and if so how much left over memory their is on the SSD?

I removed the 24GB SSD and replaced with Samsung 256 SSD and works super fast now.
