It appeared to be Non-Glare  it was a gift I set it up and did some OS changes  and put it in a gift box,  If it had a glossy screen I think I would noticed as I don't care for them.

Is there much fan noise? How quiet is it?

In any laptop the fan noise you hear mostly isn't the fan at all, but instead the Hard drive running from all the pre-installed programs running at startup. Right click on the task bar, run task manager go to the startup tab and start disabling these things. setting here at my laptop right now I don't hear any fan noise of any kind. It hasn't been turned off in months and I use it every day. I choose to turn off everything in startup. If I want something to run I don't mind clicking the desktop Icon to get it going instead of having it running all the time.  When the cooling fan comes on it is more app to be trying to cool off the heated Hard Drive from all the constant running, so now you hear not only the HD but the cooling fan as well, Now the computer is really making a noise, to say nothing of over heating. As for me I bought this for grandson, and just recommended it to another family member and am seriously thinking of getting it for myself, when I can justify having a forth laptop.

Is the screen shiny?

Not sure I understand what you mean by shiny.  The resolution is really good on this laptop, the colors are very vivid.  I recently purchased this laptop and really like it.  It's exactly what I was looking for.

how long can one work on batterypower?

Well, first of all, it's going to depend heavily on what you're doing.

That being said, I've been watching video while browsing the web with power settings set at high performance earlier today, and I squeezed 2-3 hours out of a full charge. I also had the backlight on, and the screen at full brightness.

I could take a reasonable guess that with the power settings set to balanced, you'd be able to get another hour to hour and a half out of that 2-3 I had.

I have never seen a Z710 with nvdia graphics. Does this laptop actually come with an nvidia card?

Can Win 8 be downgraded?  I'll pay more for win 7!

It can be downgraded, however I suggest you don't. Most of the drivers aren't compatible with Windows 7 so you'll have some issues. WIndows 8.1 isn't as bad as Windows 8 though, so just give it a shot!

You need to install java runtime to run jar. Just google JDK or JRE and download it. Cheer.
