does this come with the rack mounting parts?   or where to get them?

This is a tower system and didn't come with any rack mounting parts when I purchased it last year.

You should be able to purchase a standard shelf for a rack mount and place the system sideways on the shelf.

Important to note, if you are running Linux beware of the NIC as it randomly resets itself, and caused a month of grief for my customer until I disabled it and placed a different manufacturer's NIC in the system.

The unit I got from Newegg around Thanksgiving had a hard drive installed. Although it was not connected to anything. And the BiOS was not set for RAID. Although it would have been easy to change to whatever you want anyway. It's no different than any other BiOS. You just select what you want after hitting the F1 key at startup.

Might be a stupid question but does standard SATA HDD can be use with this server ? (something like a WD blue as second drive for data)

The chassis houses (2) 3.5" drives pretty easily with no extra parts. After that, you have to get creative or buy one of the Lenovo solutions. In order to install a 3rd drive, I had to swap the standard DVD drive in the top slot for a combo drive that held a notebook-standard optical drive and also had provisions for another 3.5" hard drive. This combo drive is sold by Lenovo, and has part number 0C19529, or 0C19514 if you don't need the optical drive.

Is this system compatible with Windows Server 2008R2?

Windows Small Business Server 2011, which I am running on my TS140, is based on Windows Server 2008 R2 so there should be no problem. I have also successfully installed  Windows Server 2012 Essentials, Windows 7 Pro, and Windows 10 Pro on three other TS 440 workstations and the TS 440 is a very similar machine.

The TS 140 comes with setup DVDs for getting started but note that there is no O/S, HD, or memory installed.

Yes it comes ready to power on but there is no hard drive and or course no operating system. Once you install a hard drive or ssd then put an os on it and you're ready to go!

4 gig of memory us included.  4 memory slots are included so there is plenty of room for adding additional.since only one slot is used.

None. It doesn't come with a hard drive. You have to install your own. The tower does have two 3.5" HDD bays available for you to populate with disks of your choosing.

Want to use as a desktop.  Can I install any version of Windows 7 or 8?

If you look at the Lenovo website, there are Windows 7 & 8 drivers available for the TS140.

FYI there is no hard drive in this model, if I may recommend a 500GB Samsung SSD (need 2.5' adapter and a hot glue gun ;)

what hard drive caddy does this use?

Lenovo provides two tool-less drive caddies for 3.5" HDDs.  I'm not sure if there standard or proprietary.  They seem a little flimsy in your hand, but once they're on the drive and the drive is in the case, they seem effective enough.  The pins that hold the drive are mounted to the caddy with a rubber bushing, so there is no HDD noise or vibration transferred to the case.
