Will this laptop be good for CAD programs such as Solidworks and Autocad?

I consider these units to be slightly above a netbook in terms of performance.  They would not be ideal for CAD work in my opinion.  Great for general web or Office apps but not much else.

Does this system come with Windows 8 as well? I've been hearing mixed statements about this.

Mine came with Windows 7.  But I did buy the device 3 months ago. Things may have changed now.

No, there is not an optical drive. There are 3 usb ports, 2 left and 1 right, so an external USB optical drive would be reasonably usable. If your concern is backup, there is an eSATA port, so an external hard drive would be easy and fast.

Is the RAM user replaceable?

Yes it is.  I have upgraded the RAM to 12GB.  I added an 8GB stick to the existing 4GB stick.  The 4GB is also replaceable, so you could have a machine with 16GB total if you wanted.
