newegg page specs lists "Optical Input" what could that possibly mean?  More to the point does it have optical output?

This player is basic and works well. It only has 1 HDMI out and 1 coaxial digital audio out. There is only one input on front for USB. Zero optical or analogue in or outs. As a geek tip all these new devices and TVs are software driven. As soon as you get a new device hardwire it to internet and download new device firmware to make sure it functions properly. ??

does this unit have component (RCA) outputs?

This player is digital out (HDMI) only. No analogue outputs (composite, s-video, component or audio). It is a good fast loading player otherwise. I do recommend connecting all new devices to internet just to download the latest operating firmware.
