I just want to know if this is not only a burner but I can also play my cds and dvd videos with it??

Hi Janice,

This is also a player so it will read your DVDs and CD as well. It is safe to assume that if it can burn CD and DVDs that it will read them. and to know for sure if you look at the specs it will give to a max read speed implying that it can read those formats. I have had mine for a couple weeks now. it works great is is very light weight. matter of fact if i have one complaint it is that it is so light weight it almost feels a little flimsy. I just keep mine in the box with the foam packaging when i am travelling with it in my back pack.

Yes, I plugged it into a win 10 computer to test it for this question. Worked perfect.

will this fit as an external drive to put photos on?

This device is just a CD/DVD drive. You could "burn" photos onto a DVD or CD-R but the device has no internal storage. It does work well, however without installing the software on your PC. my Win 7 notebook recognized it as an optical drive right away, worked well for what I was using it for.

does this come with the cables needed to connect it to my desktop?

Yes it did, but since it is the early USB the larger square one don't loose it. It is a pia to find an old school cable but it does a good job for the price.

Does it work with a MAC?

yes it does, I bought it to use with my mac air and works fine, had to restart for it to see it, if I recall correctly, but worked great, good deal for the price

It says M-Disc support.  Does this mean it will burn and play M-Discs?

As per Mfr spec PDF, yes. I have it but have not tried M-disc yet.

Will this work on Windows Server 2012 R2?  Our current sever doesn't have a dvd drive in it.

Yes, works perfect.  I've used them on a rack server that we forgot to order with a DVD drive.  Works with all versions of Windows desktop & servers that I have needed them for, including Server 2012R2.  It does not require any drivers, the built-in windows drivers automatically load for it.

Question 8

Does this drive have a tray that ejects outward or the flip top design where the top opens up to insert a disk? I need the kind where the tray moves out horizontally.

The tray moves horizontally. Pressing the eject button causes the tray to pop outwards enough for someone to grab the tray and slide it out but it will not fully extend automatically. The same goes for closing the tray, the user has to fully press the tray in until it clicks shut.

I upgraded the laptop this is used with to Windows 10 about 60 days ago. I have had no problems or issues with the DVD Burner. I do not use the M-Discs so I do not know if that would make a difference.
