Worked well for a while 1/10/2013 2:17:15 PM

Pros: Good price
Fast
Lightscribe

Cons: Drive has started to stick closed

Overall Review: I've had this drive in my main home PC for four years now. Installed it with a fresh build and can't recall any having any issues with installation. I never gave it much thought, it worked when I needed it to, which was very rarely. I don't burn anything to optical media anymore, so it was pretty much just used to read driver discs when setting up the computer initially and a maybe couple times after that. I probably burned a CD or two but never even used it to burn a DVD. Never used the Lightscribe function, though I wish I had, always seemed like a neat feature and it seems like it has been phased out now.

My only complaint is that the drive has started to stick closed, which happens about 9 out of 10 times when I try to open it. I can still open it using the paper clip method. I guess four years is a pretty long lifespan for an inexpensive optical drive, but I used it so rarely that I thought it might last four more. Perhaps lack of use was actually the cause of this problem, but I'm disappointed that something that has been used so little will now have to be replaced.

I'm in the process of upgrading this machine, so I've found myself needing to use an optical drive again. I'll be replacing this one, and I think I'll try something other than a Lite-On this time.

Drive Died 5/1/2012 9:28:51 AM

Pros: While it worked it was fast

Cons: A dead drive isn't useful. The drive still opens but only randomly sees discs, it cannot read discs that work fine with other drives.

Great ODD 11/29/2008 3:15:45 PM

Pros: Bought two of these, one for my HTPC and one for my main box. SATA connection is very nice, far less clutter than using PATA ribbons. Burns DVDs and CDs very quick, hasn't produced one coaster yet after ~100 cd burns and ~40 dvd burns. Best drive I've bought in a long time, most of the drives I've bought in the past couple of years die after a month or two (LG, Samsung) but these keep rockin. It's only audible when spinning up, but who cares it only does that when you insert a disk, boot up, or access the drive. My machine is very quiet and I barely hear the drive spinning up with it under my desk. Maybe all the complainants have their towers on their desks. Or maybe they're too uptight.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: Haven't used the Lightscribe option.

Just. Good. 11/29/2008 1:42:19 AM

Pros: Great drive. Reads and writes well. Great price.

Cons: Tried Lightscribe ONCE. Did not come out right AT ALL. Do not know what is wrong and I did not try to fix the problem yet. It has been about 5 months since this event. Probably firmware problems or worse yet, hardware problems that I have yet to uncover.

Great, but burning could be quieter 11/28/2008 3:44:39 PM

Pros: Very fast, whisper quiet during DVD playback. So far seems to have the same Lite-On performance and quality I've come to expect over my last few drives.

Cons: Very, very loud while burning and for initial disc spin-up. But as stated in the pros, at least it's quiet for DVD playback.

Overall Review: Don't have any LightScribe media so I haven't tried that function yet.

Finally replaced my IDE burner, gotta love the small SATA data cable compared to bulky IDE!
