do you need to add software in order to use this mouse or will it work with just the small plugin?

IT comes with the LOGITECH UNIFYING and SetPoint Settings software Disc I believe. (ALL easily attained without any disc from the logitech web site.)   YOU NEED the Unifying Software to sync up to 6 Logitech devices, (keyboards, mice, etc) on ONE DONGLE, DO NOT USE TWO DONGLES...example, one dongle for the keyboard and one for the mouse, headset, etc if you have more than one logitech unifying device. (The Dongle is the tiny usb plug in device) Both applications are HIGHLY USEFUL and I HIGHLY recommend using them to set up your mouse/Keyboard preferences.  This is a FANTASTIC mouse!  I LOVE IT.  Its great for the basic user or for basic graphics design work, like photo editing and such.  ITS VERY EASY to USE AND SET UP!  Hope this helps!

Never tried to program them as binds manually through logitech software but every game / web browser and such has detected the buttons as usable.

How does this compare to the Logitech MX revolution mouse?

This one is smaller, and has had a lot of issues with the receiver (multiple machines, plugged into different USB ports). I'd recommend the revolution over this if you're in an office setting or for home use. I'd only recommend the Anywhere to someone who is on the go and needs something portable.
