Question 1

I was just wondering, How close is this mouse to the G5? I got my g5 back while logitech was still making them, I have had it for at least 8 years and love it. But, all good things must come to an end and alas I am looking for a current logitech mouse that is as close as I can possibly get to a G5.

In terms of feel its identical except for the DPI buttons which have been moved to either side of the scroll wheel. It uses an optical sensor though instead of a laser sensor(more accurate). If you want something closer to the G5 you would want the G500S which uses a laser sensor. I've owned both and prefer the G400S though as its very similar to the old G5 except with better precision.

Question 2

I still own a MX518 and the reason I never switched to a G400 is because the middle mouse click felt "mushy". I don't know how else to describe it. How responsive is the middle mouse button click? Is there much tactile feedback?

I went from a 518 to this and have been very happy with it.  The feel overall is quite similar.  I use the middle click all of the time for both general purpose and for gaming and have had no issues at all.

Is mouse wheel capable of turning/rotating pieces on games or puzzles?

Yes, the mouse wheel is very much so capable of turning/rotating pieces on games.   I just plugged in my mouse in my pc and it worked right away without me having to do much of anything.  I am using Windows 7-64 bit Operating System.  I haven't even installed any "special" drivers from Logitech for this mouse.  Microsoft Windows just installed them in the background.   I really like that this mouse wheel "clicks" with each turn, I can gauge how little or how much I am rotating the wheel.  When I do normally pc game, I am playing games such as Call of Duty series type first person games.  The wheel rotates my various items.

Great mouse, and even better deal if you can get a good price on it.

Question 5

if i use this mouse with an iMac with OS X Mavericks can i program the side buttons to move forward and back in browsers?

i am not sure about that, but I think you just need to install a mac version drivers to do that
