what does it mean. USB 3.0 ready, Is it USB 3.0 or not?

The cable is not USB 3.0. I believe this is just marketing speak that it will work with a USB 3.0 port, because usb 3.0 is backwards compatable with 2.0 devices.

Will this unit clip to the top of my laptop monitor or does it have to set on the desk top?

It doesn't actually 'clip' to the laptop.  You can use it conventionally and mount it to the top of your laptop.

Directly below the camera there is a plastic tab, this goes in front of the laptop, to prevent camera from falling backwards.  The folding base can then be positioned behind the laptop, preventing it from falling forwards.

I have been using the camera with Windows seven for some time Now.  So yes, it is 100 percent compatible with windows 7.

How long have you had you webcam?
I have little room on my desk... how long is the connection apparatus?  
Are the views hazy or clear?

Hello, I have had my web cam for just over 2 months, GREAT QUALITY  for pictures it takes and the picture when in use!  I have my pc tower to the right of my 32" monitor.....The cable is longer than some, but still only about 3 feet in length.  That would work for most setups, if your PC tower is under your desk or down along the side of your desk, as mine is.  Hope this helps, smiles.

You would have to do it through the Sound Settings on your system, but Yes.  For instance on Windows 10: Right-click the volume speaker at the bottom right of the taskbar > Sounds > Recording > Right-click Microphone HD Pro Webcam C920 > Disable.

IT would require a video card but the video card should already be inside of your computer. Just plug and play!

When web cam is attached to monitor or tripod will it sweviel or turn right & left?

The camera itself will not swivel. We have one mounted on a camera tripod that has a swivel base. The ones we have on out TV's in conference rooms, we swivel the whole camera and brace on corner of the bracket to keep it in place.

Would like to get this for my dad for Christmas so we can Skype. Is this model Windows 8 compatible?

Manufacturer's packaging says that it is compatible with Windows Vista/7/8. I tested it on Windows 8.1 Pro and it seems to work.

does camera have a privacy plate similar to their wide angle pro webcam?

No privacy plate that I'm aware of, I just usually go into the camera control program and zoom to where I need it and it works fine that way.
