What color is the backlighting?

The backlighting is white. It looks just the same as the illustration.

Are the keys themselves illuminated (so you can see what key you are pressing in complete darkness)? Or just the space between and behind them?

The letters, numbers and symbols are illuminated white against black keys. The letters, etc. are very readable, even in complete darkness, except the following:  The "F1" through "F12" keys each have an orange illuminated symbol,  but the F-number itself is NOT illuminated and not visible in the dark. My model is Y-UY95, and is a year or two old.

Question 3

Is this keyboard compatible with windows 8.1?  I have a Lenovo model 10104  C440 touchscreen pc.  The keyboard it came with is very nice but too small and hard to see in the dark.

I cannot definitively say yes because i am using mine on windows 7 but windows 8 has native USB support and i am willing to bet the keyboard will function just fine.  The manufacturer could tell you for sure.... well... never mind... they will always say yes...LOL
I love this keyboard.  I like it so much that i bought another one and put it on the shelf for backup in case they discontinue the model which they always do with anything i love. I have two of them.  Best typing keyboard i have ever had... no more loud clicking.  Feel like a laptop keyboard with a desktop size.

Is this keyboard wireless?

no, I'm sorry this is not. I have owned for a  few years now and never have had an issue. I enjoy it and has lived up to its description

what windows does this work with?

All keyboards will work with any operating system, including all versions of windows, mac osx, and linux distro's.  Now not all the specialty buttons may not work, like the windows button might not do anything in mac osx or linux.  But this is primarily a windows keyboard, and thus will work with all versions of windows.

Is the palm rest detachable?

The answer is no, the palm-rest is not detatchable.  I would like to add that I recommend this keyboard.  We use this model where I work.  I like the "feel" of the keypresses, it's quiet, and the palm-rest is comfortable.

WHAT WIRELESS MOUSE WOULD BE COMPATIBLE WITH THIS PRODUCT?

Any mouse would work, wired or not. The keyboard itself is not wireless, so I would make sure that is what you're looking for.  I've owned two of these over the years and it is a great keyboard.

Does the Logitech k740 keyboard turn off when not in use ?

If it's plugged into the computer and the computer is turned off, then yes. If the computer is kept running then no, it won't turn off.

Question 9

Doesn't seem to have Windows 10 support? Certain keys such as volume, illumination and left shift no longer work with logitech drivers.

I have 4 of these keyboards, the one I'm typing on now is under Windows 10.
Volume works fine, mute works fine, Illumination works fine.    However I do not have setpoint installed,  just logitech gaming software which knows nothing about that keyboard.
