4 years without issue 3/26/2011 6:16:31 PM

Pros: I've run many RAID-5 cards in my career. This one I picked for my workstation, an AMD based system (was dual core, now quad-core). System was built primarily for multimedia work I do as a hobby but also had to be able to play various games, to include City of Heroes/Villians. Regarding the card, it's run flawlessly for me with three 250GB Seagate SATA-2 drives.

Cons: Newegg no longer carries it, nor anything priced as well as this card. All hardware capable RAID-5 cards are outrageously priced. I have no use for software RAID cards.

Not bad 6/6/2010 5:37:25 PM

Pros: Solid drivers available for most OSes. Works as advertised.

Cons: Heat sink was not installed properly. Had to use quite a bit of pressure to snap it back into place. Not a very good design - now I'm worried that it will come off again ...

Overall Review: If it were not for the heatsink issue, this would be a great card. However for this kind of cash, that kind of stupid stuff is inexcusable. Get an Adapted card instead.

Be sure you know what you're getting and be objective!!! 1/28/2009 6:08:35 PM

Pros: Software RAID, SAS or SATA mixed in same RAID array. Supports RAID 5 on Windows Server 2008/x86/x64, Server 2003/x86/x64.

Cons: It's software-based RAID, has not a RAM upgrade, slot, etc. available. You should know this if you're buying a RAID card and you should know better if you whine about it after the purchase!!!!!

Overall Review: If you are looking for a solid card with solidly written drivers and English language speaking support people, this offers the most bang for the buck when it comes to 3GigaBIT/s drives. You won't be disappointed with WinSvr 2003 R2 or WinSvr 2008 x64 reliability. If you want performance, spend $600+ on a caching RAID controller with a battery backup. Don't scrimp on your RAID controller if you have a choice.

I chose this controller due to the price, moderate level of performance, and good track record that I have had over the years with LSI Logic's support staff and (usually) solidly written drivers and management tools. I have gone down the RocketRAID and Areca path a few times now and anymore I say FLOCK that. I am sticking with people who know what they're doing when writing software. Tired of the buggy candy-a** junk that comes out of some of these low-rent chop shops claiming to be good RAID cards. Write STABLE software and then we'll talk, Areca (Tekram) and Highpoint!!

Doesn't work with Intel boards 5/15/2008 7:35:23 AM

Pros: I can't really say since i haven't really used it. The windows management app is nice though, much better than the one for the MegaRAID SATA series (PCI-X)

Cons: Doesn't work with the x16 slot on intel boards. I tried it in two different intel boards with onboard video. The card is detected by the system, shows the BIOS screen, and immediately says "No Hard Drives Detected. Software RAID can not be configured". At first i thought i had either a faulty card or cable, so i RMA'd it. Same thing. I also made sure the boards and this card has the latest BIOS. Also tried 3 different brands of drives.

Overall Review: it works fine in the second x16 slot on both an nVidia SLI board (ABIT) and an ATI crossfire board (Gigabyte), which i completely didnt expect. I figured it would work on the intel board and not on those.

No Surprises if You Read the Specs... 5/8/2008 8:37:11 AM

Pros: The card ships with a forward-fan out cable to 4 SATA connectors. Only tested on WinXP 64 (no support for x86 systems as the card works on storport and not scsiport commands). Setup is simple, software & drivers are without glitch and interface is impressibly simple to use.

Cons: Price is higher than it should be. Card is nearly entirely software driven (no smart chips). No RAM!!! No online capacity expansion, native command queing, raid level migration, or jumpers for individual drive failure/activity. Mixed size drive support was not tested and not expected to be supported.

Overall Review: I returned this card due to poor performance. My BioStar GF7025-M2, 1 gb ram, AMD sempron 1.8 ghz, RAID 5 setup transferred from USB to IDE @ 30.8 MB/s & 30% CPU usage. IDE to RAID was ~27 mb/s at 23% CPU usage, RAID to IDE was 38 mb/s w/ 5% usage % 100% CPU usage spikes every ~14 sec. Beware the IDE drive may well have been my bottleneck. Worst yet though, duplicating a file already on the RAID array was 10.2 mb/s @ 14% CPU!!! Even from one LVM to another was < 10 mb/s. Horrible!!! --> This is due to no cache RAM on chip! Get a card with at least 128 mb!

Does what it says 3/9/2008 8:06:02 PM

Pros: Easy installation. 64-bit drivers readily available. Solid so far.

Cons: A little pricey for what it is...

Overall Review: Using for two 15K Cheetah SAS drives.

Pros: Affordable SAS for your gaming rig!

Cons: Comes with iSAS-737P cable for attaching SATA drives. You'll need to purchase an iSAS-7382 cable if you plan to attach SAS drives.

Piece of junk 2/22/2008 11:47:12 AM

Pros: Cheap. Makes a nice frisbee.

Cons: - Performance in 64-bit operating systems is atrocious. In Windows (XP, 2003 Enterprise Server) and Linux (Debian etch, SLES 10, RHEL 5.1, CentOS 5, CentOS 4.6, OpenSUSE 10) write speeds varied from 2-9 MB/s. Read speeds from three drives in RAID 5 mode ranged from 20-40 MB/s. That's far, far too slow.
- Does not support major functions expected of a SAS controller. LSI support says that "expanders are not supported".
- Does not provide all the functionality expected of a dedicated RAID card. Reconstruction is not possible - that is, you cannot add a drive to an array, or rebuild an array with new, different drives. There's also no way to use the card in JBOD mode (that is, use it as a "simple" controller without RAID).
- LSI Linux kernel modules cause soft lockups during initialization.

Overall Review: LSI support is slow an largely unresponsive, and unhelpful when they do respond. They've "contacted the developer" of the Linux driver about the 64-bit module, and recommended that I revert to a 32-bit OS. WHAT?

I'm a cluebie, folks. I know what I'm doing, and this is a card to stay far, far away from.
