The LSI MegaRAID SAS 9280-24i4e provides a new level of system reliability, availability, and performance for businesses that are facing storage challenges driven by unprecedented data growth. Offering data transfer rates of up to 6Gb/s per port, this controller card ensures complete investment protection for existing SATA and SAS implementations. 6Gb/s SAS is designed for backward compatibility with 3Gb/s SAS as well as with 3Gb/s SATA hard drives. In addition to the internal ports, this controller comes equipped with external SAS ports which perfectly support external JBOD expansion, allowing you to connect multiple JBODs to server for a scalable and affordable solution to the growing storage requirements. Regardless of the drive speed, 6Gb/s LSI MegaRAID SAS 9280-24i4e can deliver up to twice the performance level in both read and write applications as compared to their 3Gb/s predecessors.

does the job

Pros: Chip temp is 77 C, I thought about soldering an extended heatsink but my 7" case fan may have something to do with how flawlessly it ran over the last year. Usually boards at this temp die in 11-17 months, but those same boards produce more failures than this has, so I'm confident it will last.

The heat may be explained by an old lithography process (circa 2011 when this model was introduced) but surprisingly, major firmware, management software, as well as driver updates continue to be produced by LSI into 2015.

I have a Core i7 with a RAID stripe of five SSDs and another with four spinners.

My embedded chipset produced 1620 MB (1.62 gigabytes/second) transfer rate in this configuration. The card tops out at about 740 MB/sec, so I took a 60% hit on speed. The boot time increased by 2-4 seconds or so but I'd rather have the disk config saved on a separate, manageable, configurable controller. a RAID to RAID copy will top out at 380 MB/Sec.

Cons: The heat is just something you see in boards that don't last long, but this is an unusual exception for enterprise class environments.

This model debut'ed in 2011 so the max transfer along the bus is only like 740 MB/Sec. Software raiding two cards together has proven to double this and highlights the card's internal bandwidth limitations.

Other Thoughts: This is one of the only PCIE RAID Controllers of any capacity that isn't total garbage... in fact its HIGH quality but it is significantly slower than embedded SATA III Chipsets. if your MOBO has a ton of SATA ports, decent RAID support, and uses aluminum capacitors, you could be better off using your integrated one.

I'd REALLY Like to see a modernized, SATA 3 + PCIe 4.0 version of this card! With smaller, cooler components. That would blow the lid off of the DIY server/workstation industry and gain LSI Traction with the bigger names in rebranding storage solutions.

Go LSI !

Excellent Card

Pros: It works really well with ESXi 5.1
Fine performance with 3 arrays of different config
Runs stable so far

Cons: Awkward positioning of the miniSAS connectors on top of the card which makes it virtually impossible to get the cables installed in the server we put it in
Gets rather hot

Other Thoughts: We replaced an Adaptec card with this because it always dropped out of the system on ESXI 5.1 on high I/O load (every two days or so). Also, with the Adaptec card we had PSOD's on reboots until they provided us with a "fixed" aacraid driver for 5.1

Maybe my review is biased because we are uberhappy not to have this card cr*p out like the Adaptec :]

Decent controller, bad support, worse compatiblity

Pros: - Item arrived quickly, in good condition, and with proper documentation

- Installed easily into HP Proliant DL165 G7 1U Server via riser card

- Was able to connect to all drives and create various virtual disks (RAIDs)

- Fast! A RAID 0 of 5 Kingston mid-level SSDs achieved 700+ MB/s read and 650+ MB/s write!

Cons: OK, here's the deal. I purchased this specifically because it was listed on the HCL for the LSI SAS6160 SAS Switch, which became very important to check after my HP P812 controller took a dump upon connecting to the switch. After connecting it, I quickly found that while it worked in principle (that is, it didn't catch on fire or anything), it wasn't actually compatible.

Without getting too into the weeds, a SAS Switch exists so a person can 'zone' disks from a JBOD enclosure to a controller. This card does NOT support zoning at the time of this writing, and I believe they are now working to update the firmware and/or remove it from their SAS Switch's HCL.

It took me a little over two weeks of fighting with LSI's tier 1 support before I got put in contact with an engineer who was able to clear this up. The engineer did a very good job of doing so, though.

Other Thoughts: I also started having a problem shortly after installation of this card that my ProLiant server now freezes during POST. I cannot confirm this is related to the card, as it occasionally freezes in POST even with the card removed, but the problem on started happening after installing the MegaRAID card. I've also found that if I pull the cord from the back and give it 5 seconds to drain, it will boot without freezing. Again, not sure if the two are related or not.
