Great product, but runs VERY hot. Any idea how to monitor actual temp. of unit and any examples of how to keep it cool? eg. specific PCI fans that did the job well??

These units are not really designed for ATX/BTX/Workstation chassis, unless you can meet the LFM airflow requirements (200LFM).

I currently use one of these units in a custom-built workstation, and have found that any ATX/BTX chassis with a low side vent for PCI cards will work, you just need to put a heck of a fan in the side.

As far as measuring the temp goes, you could either get an IR thermometer for pretty cheap, and measure the temperature while running a stress test, to see if you are within operating specs under heavy load (55C MAX), or you could get a fan speed controller with a temperature probe, and attach it to the heatsink.

Is there a battery backup for this card?

I do not believe so. This controller has no ram as it provides no raid functionality so a battery would be a waste. this card is good for something like Freenas that doesn't like hardware raid, or any other product that wants jbod ie storage spaces in server 2012+
