Question 1

I bought the first speaker a couple weeks ago and had to return it because I couldn't charge the battery the first time using either the supplied micro-USB cable or a wall-charger micro-USB cable for my old Nokia mobile phone.  Then, I ordered a second speaker and have had exactly the same problem?  What have I done wrong?

To charge the LUXA2, do not connect it to your PC. But rather use a small USB Transformer with USB port.  Plug the cable to the Unit, do not press On/Off button, and a red dot appears at the front, showing that the unit is being charged.  When the charge is full, the red dot disappears.
After that you can use the unit, by pressing On/Off button.  But a little tricky at that moment, sometimes you have to press twice or hold it down a few seconds until you hear a bip.
Try it and it works.

Can you keep this perpetually charging and playing music at the same time?

I've never tried it, but then again I only have it on for about 4 hrs at a time.........no problem.  Then charge it over night.
I don't see why it wouldn't work, but then again it kind why bother with Blu-tooth and wi-fi if you're going to wire up?

Question 3

Has anybody tried to use the AUX input without paring it to a bluetooth device first?  When I do, it shuts down 5-6 seconds after turning it on.   If I pair it to my tablet first (with the blue light blinking) then plug in an mp3 player into the AUX it works as expected.   But if I just turn it on with a mp3 player in the AUX, it just plays for a couple seconds and shuts back down.

I've done it both ways with the aux cord or blue tooth and it works as expected without any shut down issues.

Question 4

Thanks to everyone who provided input to my question about how to charge the battery the first time.  Here is another mystery: Do the plus (+) and minus (-) buttons work only when you connect a bluetooth device to it? I connected my Nano iPod to it using the supplied audio cable and can only adjust the volume using the buttons on the iPod itself as those on the speaker don't work!  I tried both pressing and holding down these buttons and pressing them down at rapid and slow successions, but neither of them worked!

They're slow.  When connected with Bluetooth, both device and speaker controls work, but the speaker very slow, or seemingly not at all.  The volume control on the device, in my case a Galaxy S3 phone, is smooth.
