how do I  connect this driver to my laptop? do I only need to connect the central usb type port to my laptop usb connection or do I also need to connect the dc input conection of the phr-250cc (in other words can the usb cable also supply dc power or do I need to have both cables connected to the back of the phr 250cc ?)

Yes.  Both power and data and are derived from USB.

Question 2

There is a DC power port in the back. What are the power requirements for that port?
(my new Mac Air doesn't supply enough DC with the USB to adequately power it I think)

Hi, I won't be near the enclosure until Friday so I can't answer about the power requirements.  I can tell you, however, that I had to use both included USB cables to power it -- the USB-to-USB cable and the USB-to-DC cable.  I don't use it for that reason -- two cords, two usb ports.  Not the simple portable solution I was looking for.

What capacity hard drive will this enclosure support?

I don't think there is a limit to the capacity (i.e. Gigabytes or Terra bytes) The largest I have used is 500Gig, but to be sure I would ask the manufacturer. They were very helpful when I needed info.
