will this device allow me to use 2 monitors individually, across an expanded view or will it only project my laptop onto 2 different monitors?

This device will allow you to add two additional monitors to your laptop... for a total of 3 monitors. It will make the two additional monitors and treat them as one monitor. So if you have two monitors that are 1920x1080, it will appear as one monitor that is 3840x1080. So you will need to check the monitors' resolution that you want to add and make sure that your laptop can support the required resolution. I believe that the Matrox website has an app that you can run to verify that your laptop can handle the resolution. Very good device, but make sure you buy the correct model as Newegg will not exchange this item.
