How loud is this system under load?

My NUC sits in an open media rack that lacks doors and sides. It is at the bottom of the rack and in the back but clearly visible from the couch seating position only about 8' away. I'm surprised as to how quiet it is!

I used the EFI settings to tweak the noise level down as the default settings did not match my needs. Although my use case is a simple audiophile media player, due to transcoding and DSP the system load can jump up to the mid 40s. Most of the time the system runs with a very low load and the fans are not audible even in my very quiet listening space. On boot, the system load is maxed and the fans suddenly become noticeable but certainly not loud.

Your reaction to the noise level will very much depend on your use case. As a media player in my rack, I am very happy with the noise level. I intended on rebuilding the system into a fanless case, but after using it for a few weeks I abandoned those plans due to how surprisingly quiet the system is in my listening space.

I understand RAM speed has a lot to do with iGPU performance. Is there any chance this will support DDR4-2400 or higher? There is a very small price gap between 2133 and 2666(or even 2800 if you can find a good sale). Would like to get best performance I can. Thanks!

Intel specs all NUC 6ixSYx kit with DDR4-2133.   The BIOS offers no configuration options (speed, latency) for memory, therefore, adding DDR4-2666 would most likely result in no speed increase whatsoever, and might actually decrease system stability.

The  two 16Gb DDR4-2133 sticks that I purchased from NewEgg were latency rated at "15".   You might see slightly faster performance with a smaller (8Gb) stick that has a "13" latency rating.  I can say that my system stabllity is rock solid with the 15-rated sticks, and HD video playback is not lacking.   Good Luck, Justin.

Yes but this is a piece of Junk.  Don't buy it.  I had tons of issues with mine and intel gave me my money back.  Thank You Intel!  They had a ton of issues with Skylake.   I would wait for Kaby Lake

I loaded Win 10/64, but there's no reason it won't work with Win 7. In fact, if you go to the Intel support site, you will see they offer Win 7 drivers. Be sure you load the latest BIOS (0042 or later) first thing to avoid some potential HW problems with earlier versions.

?Compatible only with Kingston HyperX CL13 RAM modules, overall problem with WHEA-error in Windows. Intel is working on solution-they must manufactre new boards! See Intel forum for all "WHEA" threads. DON'T BUY NUCs 6i5 untill Intel solve this general issue and start to produce new version of NUCs (with higher Part Number)

I don't see a question here at all, just a lot of misstatement and il-informed opinion. First off, there are many compatible memory types, not just HyperX, although those are very good. A recent BIOS update has expanded the number of other memory types that can be used. Second, the WHEA errors, while annoying for those that have experienced them, do not reflect the number of units affected. Intel has stated that they are seeing 1% returns, some distributors are seeing 3%. Intel is still investigating the source of the problem, but it may be cooling related. Several cooling related changes have been made to the BIOS and more changes may be coming.

No, I don't work for Intel. Yes, I do have a Nuc6i5. Yes, I did see a WHEA error. Yes the replacement NUC is working fine.

Besides just being able to install a larger hard drive, does this have any advantage over the SYK model?
