Will this work for windows 7 64 bit? I see many portable hard drives saying compatible with windows 8 but what about windows 7?

This hard drive will work with all 64 bit platforms.
I have one of these being used as a backup for a windows 2008 R2 64 bit OS and another one being used for a backup drive for windows 2012 datacenter (64) bit.

Both of these drives were tested on my win7 -64  bit machine before being put into production. No problems at all.

Yes it does.    I only use the Drive and not the backup software that came with it.    No problem plugging in the drive into the USB port and accessing my files.    But if you are asking if the Backup software is win7 certified,  that should be documented with the software or when you launch it and it should check to see if the OS is compatible.    Great drive, I recommend it.

Hi there,

I'm looking for a 2 TB external hard drive that will be compatible with my MacBook.  (white Mac I bought new in 2007)  I'm not knowledgeable about this kind of thing (I haven't even been able to find the USB port number on my computer to verify that it is 2.0, but from my research online, I believe that it must be 2.0)

I just want to be sure that the plug for this item will fit into my computer.

I was also wondering what it means that this item is "USB 3.0 and also compatible with USB 2.0" does this mean that it just functions with 2.0 but at a slower speed, or does this mean that it will work at the same speed with a 2.0 system as it would with a 3.0?  I guess I'm just wondering what the term "compatible" really means here.

I hope this makes sense.  Thank you very much for the help!

Well to answer the first part of your question the computer that you have should be fitted with USB 2.0, it is not a USB 3.0 since that is a newer development for wide use, and it should have no problem once formatted correctly to run this drive.

To answer your question about the compatibility USB 3.0 runs at a faster speed than USB 2.0 so this drive is able to work at both speeds. If you plug it into a USB 3.0 it will transfer at that speed, if you plug it into a USB 2.0 it will then run at that speed instead.

I have used it on both windows 7 and windows 8.x machines as a external hard drive without a problem. In fact I use it interchangeably between my windows 7 and window 8.2 machine.  I have never used any of WD software that comes with the drive.

Can I switch between two laptops, both Macs, i.e. can I store data from two different sources as I use two Mac laptops, one for my teaching and one for my editing?

I can't see any reason why not.  I do not have a Mac, but I regularly use this drive (and lots of other USB 2/3 drives) on lots of computers without any issues.  Of course you can only have it attached to one at a time, but I see no problem connecting to as many computers as you want.

I don't know why it wouldn't work although I don't have mine installed on a computer running Windows 10 64 bit. I have mine installed on a win 7 64 bit system. I hope this helps you in your decision.

I cannot recall at the moment, but it's the width is about the size of a iphone 6S plus and its height. It's a small enough size to fit in any pants pocket.

It requires reformatting for the Mac.  If you contact WD support they can give you a walk through to do it.

Can I use this external drive to back up files from my Mac?

Yes, the mac will be able to read it without issue as it comes formatted NTFS, but I would format it to HFS as soon as I got it for the mac regardless. As shipped you will be able to read but not write to it.
