Question 1

Apple now uses Time Capsule. Is this drive compatible with it?

Accepted Answer

Definitely is! I've been backing up couple times a week for over a year and I still have plenty of space for other stuff. Plug it in and Time Capsule will basically take care of everything for you! I'm running on OS X Yosemite v. 10.10.3

Question 2

Will this work with Snow Leopard?

Accepted Answer

Yes. I used it for my Time Machine backups with Snow Leopard and currently use the same drive for Yosemite.

Question 3

this is compatible with Windows machines also right ?

Accepted Answer

This drive is specifically designed to work with MACs and is formatted with MAC OS (Journaled) format and not NTFS or FAT32. You could use the drive with Windows if you could reformat it to use NTFS. I am not sure why you would do that. I would just buy the Windows version that is already formatted and ready to go.

Question 4

I wan to use tht s with a Windows7 PC and an IMac to share pictures. Is this the best choice or should I get the "PC" version?

Accepted Answer

Jack

As long as you format the drive as FAT32 (Same format as most Thumb Drives) you will be able to share any file that is less than 2GB. Since you are mostly saving Photos you shouldn't run into any file size issues. Connect the Drive to your Windows machine first, then go to"My Computer" right click on the drive, then under files system select FAT32, then format.

You can use the same method on any hard drive whether it says MAC or PC. Just remember to format the drive first before you start copying files. If you do it after all the files will be erased.

Question 5

Is this drive compatible with imac 10.5.1?

Accepted Answer

It most likely would work but I have used it as far back as 10.7.x. The only question would be if the USB drive drivers were in the version of the OS.

Question 6

HI I'm Getting this for my sister--she has a 2011 Imac. OS 10.7.45 Is this compatible with it? Thanks
Joshua

Accepted Answer

Hi Joshua,

I purchased this about six months ago. It was plug & play on my Mac running 10.9 (at the time). The disk format hasn't changed for Mac in a long time, so it should be compatible with your sister's 10.7.x version. If your sister's Mac is included in the list at below taken from Apple's website, then she should probably upgrade anyway (after backing up, of course). Search for "upgrade to Yosemite".

iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Xserve (Early 2009)

I hope this helps.

Good Luck.

Joe

Question 7

Need to backup Mac still on OS 10.6.8 before I upgrade. Will Time Machine detect this / is it compatible?

Accepted Answer

We use this and other WD My Passport drives for Time Machine on several macs. Always good performance.

Question 8

What is the RPMs?

Accepted Answer

Good question! I've gone through the paperwork that came with this drive, and gone to the WD website and read their manual. I can find nothing that gives the speed. They only emphasize the 'blazing fast USB 3" speeds.

I guess you would need to contact WD to get your answer, or take one apart ;)

Question 9

is this drive compatible with usb 2.0 ?

Accepted Answer

Yes. It's compatible.

Question 10

Is this drive compatible with Mac OS 10.5.8 Leopard ?

Accepted Answer

Yes it works. I own it and it's worked for my iMac running Snow Leopard and now Yosemite. I use it with Time Machine.
