1 year still going strong 10/3/2013 2:04:06 PM

Pros: I've had this thing in my rig for over a year now, and it's still performing perfectly. I have had zero issues with it, even after 3 versions of the Dataplex software, a firmware upgrade, and two Windows reinstalls. It's been through several power outages, in which it always recovers (rebuilding cache) within a few minutes. And I've used it on two LGA 1155 motherboards to date.

No user-interface. Set and forget.

Even when its capacity is full, it keeps Windows, Office, browsers and other daily-programs in, just knocks out things like game saves and levels it's cached least-recently to make room for new caching.

Cons: The 100GB version would've been absolutely perfect for me, since I get HDD-speeds every so often on a program I haven't used in a while.

Caches about 15 game saves at a time, along with the levels, so it understandably runs out of capacity.

Overall Review: Price went up since last year?

Great cache SSD 11/30/2012 4:12:18 AM

Pros: It does exactly what it says it does: cache your primary hard drive at SSD speed.
-Install it and forget it.
-Games load in 1/3 the time.
-Programs launch as fast as you can click on them.
-It caches writes, not just reads.
-Way cheaper than a 1 or 2 TB SSD.
-Great inexpensive upgrade for an older machine.

Cons: No major cons, but a few nitpicky details:
-For some reason everything but my boot and shutdown times seems faster. That's not really a con for me, though, because I never shut down unless I have to.
-The Dataplex software has absolutely no user interface.
-Mushkin recommends updating the drive's firmware but after installing the Dataplex software, the drive is hidden from Windows. You have to uninstall the software to update the firmware or update it before installing.
-3.5" mounting bracket will probably work for most cases but it wouldn't work with my Antec P182. The bracket is too short for the bottom vertical hard drive bays and lacks the bottom screw holes for the upper horizontal bays. I had to use the bracket from an Intel SSD to mount it.
-No Windows 8 support yet. I'm not running it but it may matter to some people.
-The limitations that a few people have noted probably won't be a problem for 99% of the people buying one of these drives.

Overall Review: I'm only seeing about 275 MBps read and write speed, but it looks like my SATA-II controller is the bottleneck, not the drive itself. It's still easily 3x faster than the 1 TB Seagate Baracuda it's caching. I didn't want to sink a ton of money into my 6 year old Core 2 Quad build, but this breathed new life into it.

I was let down 10/24/2012 9:05:18 PM

Pros: Well, it's a 100gb SSD for pretty cheap

Cons: As other reviewer has said, it has some pretty severe limitations. It's meant for use as a cache SSD.
On an unrelated note, product was DOA when I received it.

Overall Review: I should have put more research into this SSD before I made my purchase, but that's more my fault than Newegg's or Mushkin's.

Dataplex software has "Limitations" you should know about 10/22/2012 4:58:20 PM

Pros: - inexpensive
- promises moderate gain in storage performance without
the extra cost or installation hassle of a typical SSD
- Mushkin products generally good quality, reliable

Cons: Bundled Nvelo Dataplex software that is really the whole point of the product has some showstopping "limitations" that Nvelo seems to be trying pretty hard to keep under wraps. It's incompatible with any motherboard that uses nVidia chipsets, most notably. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that many of the people who have experienced severe problems with Dataplex and subsequently written negative reviews and comments about the products that use it had actually been affected by one of these limitations. For my part I discovered that limitation above in time to ask for a refund.

Overall Review: Here are the "limitations" as found at Nvelo's web site, on a page ( that is merely hyperlinked on a page prior to download and not even explicitly displayed to someone downloading the software:

Dataplex Limitations

Please note the following limitations before installing Dataplex

1. The target drive must be the primary boot drive. Caching of a
secondary drive is not supported.
2. Only MBR (Master Boot Record) partitions are supported.
GPT (GUID Partition Table) partitions are not supported.
3. The Windows Reserved System Partition (100MB partition) must be
on the same HDD as the Windows installation (C:\Windows folder)
4. Multiple OSes are not supported.
5. There is no support for target drives > 2TB in capacity.
6. Only one cache drive is supported in a system.
7. There cannot be two identical SSDs in the system, one of which
is to be used as cache.
8. There is no support for RAID sets as the cache drive.
9. If after uninstallation of Dataplex, the system is restored to a
prior state in which Dataplex was installed, Dataplex will be
started in a disabled state.
10. The following configuration(s) are not supported:
- NVIDIA storage controllers

It works! 9/24/2012 4:26:31 PM

Pros: Works as advertised. Very good read speed and decent write speed and the cache space was plenty for my commonly used OS and application files.

Cons: Installation was touchy. Had to restore boot partition once and reboot several times before the Dataplex software worked properly. After that, it has been trouble free.

Excellent when working properly 9/20/2012 8:23:27 AM

Pros: This drive definitely speeds your computer up. by about the 3rd restart the dataplex software has memorized most of the programs that you frequently access and moved it over to the SSD, which means you effectively get SSD speeds with HDD capacity at a fraction of the price. Not only that, but Mushkin's cache SSD seems to be the fastest on the market currently

Cons: The problems arrise with the dataplex software, which is a required install, since it runs the cache. The first week was one problem after the other. I ended up with two corrupted, unbootable HDDs.This is a problem frequently experienced and discussed in other reviews of dataplex powered caching SSDs.

Overall Review: It has definitely been a headache, but I was determined to get it working. I would suggest getting a build that is fresh and already has everything you want installed, then copying it to another HDD before you try to install dataplex. I also would recommend not screwing around with the registry, and leaving programs that do out (such as ccleaner). I also went into my power settings and made sure my comp never went to sleep or my HDD was ever put into hibernation. I'm not sure how well any of these steps have contributed, but I've managed to get a stable build, and It's very fast. Just prepare for some turbulence if you're looking into SSD caching.
