Pros: * Inexpensive * Looks nice * Works well, when it actually works
Cons: * Doesn't hold up long term
Overall Review: I bought this switching hub just over a year ago and it's worked fine until now. However, it has started randomly glitching. All the lights stay on and it LOOKS like it's working, but it won't transfer data at all. Unplugging and re-plugging it fixes it for a while. If you're a small business and rely on your network 24x7x365, then spend a little extra money to get a Cisco or other professional grade switch.
Pros: Nice idea if it worked.
Cons: I've RMA'd 3 of these. I'm just about to go for my 4th. The problem has always been that one or more port does not work at Gigabit speeds. Plug the computer into a different port and it works fine -- go back to the bad port and you only get 100Mbps. This product is just Junk! I own several other gigabit switches and haven't had any troubles with the rest.
Pros: It's a good reliable switch. I've used the similar 5-port model in the past, and purchased this to move additional machines to gig-e.
Cons: The specifications Newegg publish for this product are misleading. The product page claims that the buffer memory is 1MB. However, the product packaging and Netgear's own website make it clear that the buffer is only 128KB. I might have selected one of Netgear's cheaper competitors if the specifications had been accurate.
Pros: Worked for a while, maybe a year? Maybe that's all you can expect at this price?
Cons: Some PCs would seem to be connected (link light) but couldn't reliably get a DHCP address or pass data. Others couldn't negotiate a gigabit connection (amber LED instead of green). Plug it into a different port and it'd go green -- but it wasn't always the same port. When the uplink port to my main switch was the port going wonky, then all the PCs would be off the Internet. I didn't try too hard to analyze it, just threw it out.
Overall Review: My 5-port version (GS605 v2) is also unreliable, but less so.
Pros: Nice looking switch, goes well with my Netgear router. Good gigabit speed on my home network - when it works. Simply plug it in and gigabit to go! Long term NewEgg customer. NewEgg is consistently, in my opinion, a 5 Star retailer. See below
Cons: If a 10/100 computer is connected, other connections randomly drop from 1000mps to 100mps. Randomly drops speed to 100 with only gigabit computers attached as well. Even on a fresh computer boot may connect at slower speed. Can correct speed by unplugging switch and rebooting it as needed. Very convenient! After 2 weeks was going to return switch and when I went for an RMA there was a notice that the warranty/return had expired for this product. My first disappointment with NewEgg.
Overall Review: Network consists of a MacBook pro G4, 1 dualboot 32bit XP Pro/Ubuntu, 1 dualboot 64bit XP Pro/Ubuntu, and 1 32 bit XP Pro. Various "guest" computers. Despite this experience, NewEgg remains my #1 source for computer parts, accessories, etc.
Pros: Aesthetically pleasing white case design (in my opinion). I prefer the ports in the rear of the unit myself, as opposed to the rackmountable Netgear units that have the ports in the front.
Cons: Very unreliable. I bought two of these for my (rather complex) home network, and both have been the cause for network connectivity issues. After about a year for each unit, the network ports wouldn't connect at GigE speeds anymore, and would transfer at most 500kB/sec even when the negotiated link speed was 100Mb. For those that don't know, GigE should transfer theoretically at about 125MB/s (if the HDD can keep up), 100Mb at 12.5MB/s, and 10Mb at 1.25MB/s. My transfer rates were less than 10Mb speeds!
Overall Review: It took a while to diagnose the problem. At first I thought it was a failed NIC, but the problem persisted through different cards. Then I thought it might be a computer issue, but almost every computer attached to the switch was having connectivity issues. I temporarily swapped out the switch to a different one and things were working all speedy-like again. With two of these units having gone bad, I can't say I will buy another one, nor can I recommend this unit to anyone else in good faith. This was a huge problem for me since my File Server was connected to this switch and I do a lot of file transfers for the work I do.
Pros: It was cheap at the time after rebates and newegg was great as usual.
Cons: We bought 6 of these for various uses at some of our offices. Everyone has failed in 6 months or less. Some with very light duty. Poor warranty and poor support from netgear. I have bought many great netgear products, but this switch is not one of them. Pay a little more for higher quality netgear switch then this. This is very unreliable and unacceptable for a business or home environment.
Pros: It looks pretty. Can keep paper from blowing away.
Cons: Failed just shy of 3 years. MTBF is 10 years? Right.... Back that up with a warranty. Ports would light and devices would connect, they would even move some packets, but on heavy use the switch would squeel in agony, literally make noise .. lights would flicker on and off and transfer rates were sub 10 Mbps. It didn't matter which ports I plugged devices into. I have three other switches around the house, one of them going on 10+ years old, that are still rock solid. This is my first and last Netgear product.
Overall Review: Half a benjamin every decade is reasonable. Half a benjamin every three years is robbery.
