The    " /1000 "    in the description of 10/100/1000 means gigabit capable

I should be a bit more specific All 24 ports are POE, the first 8 ports can be POE+ if you needed.

Yes the rackmount brackets are included along with the screws for both the switch and rack.

how far can the POE power push out?  50ft, 100ft?

Basically the Poe will work the max distance of Cat5 which is 325' but with some power loss.  The first 8 set of ports are 30W, the rest is only 15W so longer cables should use the first 8 depending on the device.  If the device only needs 6W then the 15W ports will work fine at the max distance.
Using Cat6 will help with the loss as well, it's a heavier gauge cable.

Can i use this switch with a non-PPOE device as well?

These switches will only provide POE if the device on the other end requires it. It operates as a standard switch otherwise.

I am placing this into a 19" rack.  I just need to know how many U's I should allot for the device?

The chassis is 1U in height. Ventilation is on the left and right sides so you should be able to stack the units one atop the other.

I'm very happy with the switch.  If you want PoE on ALL phone this one does not have enough PoE ports.  Get the GS728TPP (double P) because ALL ports are PoE and it has a higher wattage capacity.  See this:

What is the dcb levels of the fans since this will be in a room used by people.   Noise is a factor with our current switch we are wanting to replace.   Also is power consumption based on the ports used and not for those unused?

I haven't measured noise levels, but in your situation, the noise will be a problem I suspect. I purchased one of these for a media closet and am delaying using it because it is so loud. Have a 16-port Netgear that is at capacity, and I purchased this model as an additional switch primarily for its PoE ports to be used for some security cameras I am planning to install.

I haven't gotten around to the cameras yet, and I leave this switch unplugged because the noise is noticeable even with the closet doors closed. I may buy another switch when I install the cameras. I can't answer your power question, but I would take other reviewers' comments about noise levels seriously. I wish I had.

Question 10

Hello, can anyone tell me:
- How much noise does the switch make? (roughly - is it one of those "jet engine" devices?)
- How much power does the switch consume in idle mode (i.e. without PoE, without traffic, without connected nodes)

Hi Lorin,

WE have deployed a few of these switches and like them a lot.

The switch is pretty quiet and not too disturbing in an office environment. I do not know how much power it consumes idling, however the maximum power consumption is 264 watts. It does have green features to reduce power consumption. Netgear also says:  when Short Cable Mode is enabled, the device will check the cable length and reduce the output power if the cable length is less than 10 meters. When Sleep Mode is enabled on a port, the port will automatically enter a lower power mode if there is no link. When EEE Mode is enabled on a port, the port will work in an Energy Efficiency mode that fully conforms to the standard of IEEE802.3az (EEE).
