Does it run xbmc ?

I am not sure. The google play within this device is still evolving. Not all apps can be found here that are supported to run on this device. In a way, there are a lot of limitations.

Does this model access Hulu Plus?

Go with the apple tv.  This one has an unusable remote control, and the display never lines up with the size of the tv.

can I hook it up directly to my tv, bypassing my cable box?

Yea and if your tv has HDMI it will plug right up to it, but you need the other HDMI plugged to whatever your recording from

Do you need a cable box in order for all of this to work? I'm only interested in having internet on my tv more than anything. Also am I restricted on what I can browse on tv or no?

You would only need a cable box if you also wish to push movies/shows from cable tv on to this device - an app called Live TV enables that feature. This is not mandatory however. You can just skip that process and use the device solely for internet on tv capabilities such as netflix and other apps. The browser capabilities are full using Google Chrome browser so you can browse thru internet just like you would on a computer. Hope this helped!
