Does this work with a Nikon D5100?

Only for manual focus. The D5100 body does not have a focus motor which is required to auto focus this lens. This means you would have to purchase a lens with a built in focus motor. I shoot with a D7000 which has this motor. Older cameras like the D80 usually have the focus motor.

I do believe there is a version of this lens that has the built in motor that will work with the D5100. Other then needing a body with a motor, this lens does shoot really nice sharp photos. I use it for my portraits primarily. also works great in low light.

Question 2

I have a Nikon D40, will this work and is it considered a prime lens?

Yes it is a prime lens and yes it will. However, it will not auto focus, you will have to manually focus it. If you want one that will auto focus get the 50mm f/1.8G

I have the D3200 and would like to add a 3rd lens to my kit and I'm interested in this one but would like to know if this one would be compatible?

It is compatible but the auto-focus might not work but I find focusing manually is faster and more accurate anyway. For the price it's an unbeatable deal.

Something to note, this is a "normal" lens for a full frame camera, on anything with an APS-C sensor (which the 3200 has) this is a slight telephoto. Normal just means that the image won't appear Zoomed in or out compared to your normal vision. If you're looking for a normal lens for the D3200 (or any APS-C) go with a 35mm prime.

Question 4

My wife loves this lens but the auto focus doesn't work on her her D5200. Thinks its not compatible with this camera? Works on my Mother-in-law's D5100.

D5200 requires CPU lenses, AF-S or AF-I NIKKOR. Check page 72 of your users manual for compatible lenses. Sorry :(
