Can this product be used to record barking dogs outdoors? Is it waterproof? How long do the batteries work?

The mic is quite sensitive, it should work outside especially if directed at the subject.  You could place the recorder in a plastic bag to protect it from water damage, it may effect the sensitivity a little but should work.  Battery life is quite good, I have used mine for several hours and the battery life indicator shows a full charge.

No, you cannot connect to a PC. Which totally sucks.

Is this compatible with external microphone(s) as well? I noticed some lapel mics that were said to be compatible with Olympus.

Hi Roy,
             Yes it is! you can connect your own MIC. It's a very good device. I bought it an year ago and didn't have any problem with it.

No. It has no PC connection or saving methods what so ever.
