do i have to run this through another system?

It is not a stand alone unit.  It has to be connected to a receiver or to an amplifier if you are using separates.  If you are not yet very knowledgeable about audio you should be looking at a simple all in one system.

Question 2

I don't see in the Overview or Specifications what CD formats this machine will play, i.e. CD-R, CD+R, CD-RW, mp3, etc.  Does anyone know?

according to the owner's manual it plays audio cd, cd-r, cd-rw, cd extra and mp3. 
i've only used commercial disks, but it does those pretty well. nice player.

Hi guys! I lost my manual so I can't find out how to repeat a single song. I've tried hitting repeat from the player and the remote. If anybody knows may you please let me know? Thank you

The best thing to do is always go to their website and download the manual. After a while some companies decide to stop supporting a product and the owners manual may no longer be available.

What is the length, width and height in inches?

measured at 17" wide, 4 7/8"  high and 16 1/2" deep. it does stick out over the front of the shelf.

Will this unit also play DVDs? I had a comparable but much older unit that did.

No, the ONKYO DXC390 6-Disc Carousel Changer CD Player does not play DVDs. It is designed to play regular CDs, home-burned CD-Rs and CD-RWs, and MP3 discs.
