Question 1

I have my PC connected via DVI to HDMI cable(video signal only no audio) and my sound ran from my optical out on my motherboard to optical in. Will I be able to have the Video on HDMI and the sound coming through optical? So pretty much im asking if I can have the video set to one hdmi video signal but the audio coming in through optical?

Yes Darren, all of the inputs can be assigned any way you like.
For example, HDMI 1 is defaulted to DVD. It can be re-assigned to game or CBL/SAT. The same goes for the audio inputs. The digital (Optical or Coaxial) inputs can be paired with any of the HDMI inputs.

Question 2

Can two TVs connected to this unit display different content? One from a cable box and one from a blurray player? Or two separate cable boxes?

I believe there's only a single HDMI out, so not that way. You might be able to attach a second tv via the component output, but that's only a guess. Even then I expect you'd be limited to one output signal at a time.

I've had fairly decent results calling Onkyo support – they might be able to help.

Question 3

The USB port, will it support video?  If yes, what formats will it support as in AVI, MP4 or what?  Then, will it project the video and audio onto an HDMI television link so I can watch it one my TVs.   You talk about two TV out puts, is that the main to support 4K and the sub to support regular 780 P or what?

Unfortunately I cannot answer your first question.  I have not used the USB port for anything.  I have a media PC next to the receiver that I use for all my media.

I also do not know about the quality of the second video output.  I would assume that this is full 4k, but I have not used it either.

Question 4

I currently have a slightly older HDTV that only accepts Component in. If I plug in devices to this receiver via HDMI will the receiver output through component?

It should. I have no way to test this, but according to the manual, it will output video connections in order of HDMI, component, and then composite. The only restriction is that it can't convert digital audio to analog and vice versa. So, I'd hazard that as long as you're not using the speakers on your TV, i.e. using it as a monitor only, you should be okay.

Question 5

with this product can you run 2 separate inputs to 2 separate zones?

specifically can you have indoor wireless surround sound from a tv and simultaneous outdoor wireless speakers from a separate audio input (say networked computer or pad)?

Hello Kenny,

Yes, the scenario you described is possible.
Zone 1 (Main Room) can be any input.
HDMI, Analog, Net Bluetooth, AM/FM etc...

Zone 2 must be an analog input. An HDMI can not be used in Zone 2. Net, USB, Bluetooth, and AM/FM can be used in Zone 2
but can not be shared. That is to say if you are listening to 
radio in Zone 1, then you must listen to the same radio station 
in Zone 2. The same goes for Bluetooth and Net (Pandora, Spotify etc...) Keep in mind that if you have 2 options for connecting Zone 2.

Option 1.
Connect speakers directly to the Onkyo receiver. There are speaker connections for 2 speakers. If you use this option, Zone 1 (Main Room) will only be able to play sound in 5.1 If you have a 7.1 setup, it will change to 5.1 whenever Zone 2 is turned on.

Option 2.
Connect a small amplifier to the Zone 2 Line Out connection.
Zone 1 7.1 will not be affected. 
If you are only using 5.1 in main room then it will not matter.

BTW.. I am very pleased with my TX-NR636

Question 6

Will the Onkyo TX-NR 636 Output to a pre-amp and be able to offer good sound quality. Preamp I am looking at is the Technical Pro HB3502U and am going to be running 4 800 watt rms 1000 watt peak speakers. want to know if this will output properly to the system I have ?

I believe the Onkyo TX-NR 636 receiver will output to a pre-amp with no problem. I don't have a pre-amp hooked up to my system but I do have a subwoofer hooked up and I believe a pre-amp would make it sound better.

Will this receiver support AAC 5.1 over HDMI input?
