is usb the power source ?

Yes, USB is the power source. You have to make sure the connector is seated firmly, but after that that it works  very well. However, as is the case for all drive enclosures, you have to take care that the drive has the same thickness that the enclosure was designed for.

Does it have a ON/OFF power switch?

It does not, no. But it's powered by usb, which can easily be unplugged to prevent wasting power. Though make sure to eject the drive first so it's not in use, or you may damage it.

It does come with a cable.  I run a computer lab at a university and handle a lot of faculty laptops.  As we replace the hard drives in laptops (usually for faster solid state drives) I reformat the old drive and put in one of these external boxes.  I've used a lot of different types, this one is my favorite.  I just bought my second batch of 5 drives, so far, they have worked flawlessly.  I've had problems with other drives not having sufficient voltage on the USB cable to work effectively, usually necessitating a powered USB port to work.  So far, this model has NOT had that problem.

How does this connect to the hard drive?

I am unsure just what you are asking. This case does not connect to any hard drive. You install a notebook size 2.5 inch hard drive inside this case.

You take the case apart and install the 2.5 inch (notebook size) hard drive in the case by pushing the sata connection on the hard drive into the sata connection in the case, then you close the case, connect the USB cable to your computer USB port. Assuming you are using Windows, the drive should be found and a driver for it installed. Then you use it the same as you would use any internal hard drive.

I have a Lenova laptop.    Long story short needed a new laptop (touchscreen wont work, two USB ports not working....among other things.).   Because I only have one USB port working and the touchscreen does not work I need to use the working USB port for a mouse.    This creates problem in trying to get all my data off the computer an on to my new one.   Can i remove the hard drive from the old computer and use this to effectively make the old computers hard drive into an external hard drive ...connect it to my new computer via USB and transfer over my data???

That are many ways you can get this done. Here is the easiest one, get your old hard drive (from the system that is defective) and use with the external enclosure. The external HDD can be used as a backup solution from now on. Another way, you could get a cheap USB hub and connect to the USB port that is working. That way you can connect/plug as many USB devices as the HUB allows. Just have in mind, if you have an apple system, the partition system differ from Windows or Linux (chrome, Ubuntu). In other words, you won't be able to see your files.  Good luck on it and if you have any more questions feel free to ask.

It is only a case. You must buy your own hard drive (2.5" SATA) to put into the drive. If there was a 1TB drive in it the price would be higher.

mine came with a USB 3.0 cable - - the laptop end of the cable can go into either a USB 2 or USB 3 port, but the end of the cable that goes in the housing can only go into a USB 3 device -

used the ORICO and other USB 3 enclosure to clone a hard drive with Win7 for a computer - - went REALLY fast!

I have a 2.5 inch ST1000LM024 that I swapped out of my laptop - will it fit properly in this case?

Based on the specs of your drive, 2.5" 9mm tall, and the specs of THIS ORICO 2588US3 case (Newegg: 0VN-0003-000H1), it should fit just fine.  This also assumes there are no extra "stuff" attached to the outside of the bare Hard Drive, as some computer makers like to do.  A BARE ST1000LM024 should fit.

Does this package include sata adapter?

The 2.5" drive plugs-in inside the enclosure, and that must be a SATA interface.  But the interface to the computer is USB3.  This enclosure works fine.  I used it with an SSD drive, and copied from a conventional drive in the computer to the SSD, then swapped the two drives, and used the conventional drive in the enclosure as a portable 250GB USB3 drive.  It works.  And it is cheap.

This is 99% of the laptop in last 6-7 years.
