Further, it provides improved control over the depth of field that facilitates subject isolation and enables working with selective focus techniques. The front lens possesses water- and oil-repellent coating. Further, a rubber sealing incorporated in the mount design makes the lens dust- and splash-resistant.

The design comes with three SLD elements and four aspherical elements that reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations and limit distortion. Additionally, the constant f/ 2.8 maximum aperture allows consistent performance even in the full zoom range.
The Super Multi-Layer Coating suppresses flare and ghosting and renders higher contrast and color fidelity in strong lighting conditions and harsh climates. The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) outputs quick and quiet autofocus. The HSM even allows full-time manual focus override. Further, the Optical Stabilizer assists handheld shooting and minimizes camera shake resulting in sharper imagery.
The Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material construction allows greater precision and withstands wide temperature variations. Further, the bayonet mount brass-constructed ensures accuracy and durability. Although the Standard zoom lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, it is compatible with DX models also. The lens provides 36-105 mm equivalent focal length in DX Camera models.
