This lens is a high-performance L-series zoom lens with a wide-angle range of 16-35mm and a fast f/2.8 aperture. It is water-resistant and has improved edge-to-edge image quality. It also has three types of aspherical lens elements: ground, replica and GMo, for better optical performance. The lens has a quiet and fast autofocus system with an ultrasonic motor (USM) and enhanced AF algorithms. It also allows precise manual focus even in One Shot AF mode.
