Light a cigarette and place the device in the smoke. Wait for the reading to stabilize.
Smoldering paper test: Light a piece of paper or tissue, extinguish it quickly, place the smoking paper or ashes in a sealed container, and use the detector to check for smoke.
But do not bring open flames close to the detector, as high temperatures can damage the device's sensors.

A: Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas, so the smell you're detecting is unlikely to be coming from carbon monoxide. The smell may be caused by a leak of another gas, such as natural gas. We recommend using a combustible gas detector to identify the source.
Q: Why carbon monoxide cannot be detected even when there is a source of combustion?
