Wood staining tips and tricks
Staining is one of the most popular coatings in the painting industry for finishing or refinishing wood. Staining might seem like an easier solution over painting, but if not done right one can leave a surface uneven. Before jumping into your staining project, be sure to educate yourself on stain colors and types. These may differ based on your surface and desired color.
How To Apply Wood Stain
- Research: Understand your wood, stain and materials
- Gather Materials & Prep Your Space: Avoid the mess and uneven strokes by gathering your materials firs.
- Test: Determine how many coats you’ll need.
- Sand & Clean: Before applying any stain, sand the wood to ensure a smooth, even and absorbent surface. Once sanded, use a tack cloth to pick up unwanted particles.
- Begin Staining: With your staining pad or wiper, slowly go with the grain of the wood.
- Let Dry, Clean & Repeat: Let your stain dry, clean with a tack cloth and continue adding coats until you are satisfied with the hue.
- Seal The Stain: If you are looking for a glossy finish, add a sealant coat once the final stain coat is dry.
- Let Dry & Enjoy!
