Can I use this device to connect two 3.5" HDD disks uninstalled from my old desktop to a computer? Or  is this system just for cloning from one HDD to another without PC?

Absolutely. I have used both bays to pull data from two drives and put on a third drive in the host computer. I have not used the built-in clone, but prefer using clonezilla to clone drives. Used this device to have the "template" system with clonezilla to image computers when upgrading Linux systems in a computer lab.

Can this clone an encrypted drive?

Yes with TrueCrypt – I successfully cloned a 160GB drive to a 500GB drive as follows: Source: 160GB w/2 4GB partitions and the rest NTFS.  Used TrueCrypt's "Encrypt a non-system partition/drive" on the small partitions – one "Create encrypted volume and format it" and the other "Encrypt partition in place" then added a file to all 3.  The destination partitions were the same; encryption worked and the files were intact.  However, there was 340 GB of free space.  Elapsed time: 58 minutes.  I'll post my full review tonight… check back in a few days.

Can you hook it up to a laptop?

Yes, if your laptop has USB2.0 or USB2.0 ports.  You can use these Drive docks on any computer that has and supports a USB port.

Has anyone used this to clone a TiVo drive?

No, but if the Tivo is a conventional hard drive, it should work. No harm in trying as the Orico makes an exact bit-for-bit copy of the original HD. I cloned my 2 TB boot drive with windows 7 64-bit as a back up. It took 5 hrs but did a great job! My PC booted and ran as usual with the clone. Just remember the target drive MUST be the same size or larger than the source dive.

If I were to transfer data from two disks (A and B) to a drive (C) that can hold the space of both, will I have both A and B's data or one or the other? In other words, is it mirroring or copying?

I think I get what you asking. You can do what you are asking if you have the docking bay hooked up to your PC. In other words if you just use the docking bay's copy feature all it does is copy a whole disk to another disk. So if you copied drive A to drive C and then popped drive B in and hit copy you would over write what had been already copied from A to C.but if you just need to copy data from A and B to C you can do that by using the PC as your middle man. Have A and C in the docking bay hooked up to PC copy data just like they are 2 external drives. Then do the same with B to C. Hope this helps. Great product by the way.

if i buy this product will my Samsung 850 Pro 512GB SDD be compatibility for it?

Yup! It actually as you can see in the picture has a slotted door so it can hold 2.5" inch drive SSD or HDD. It uses USB 3.0 (Don't worry though, its backwards compatible with USB 2.0) so it can utilize the speed of the SSD. Hope this helps!

Can it duplicate from a smaller drive to same/bigger drive?  Also, how about from a bigger drive with unused space to a smaller drive?  How does it handle partition size without user input?

Accepted Answer

It does work from smaller to bigger.  It makes a partition on the bigger drive the size of the source drive which can be expanded afterwards with a partition manager. As far as the second question, I have not tried it. But I assume if you were to shrink the partition size first to exclude the unused space, you should be good.

I need a device that will duplicate a 32 GB USB Drive to another 32 GB USB Drive without being connected to a PC. Will this device clone USB flash drives?
