Question 1

will this be ready to go or do i need anything else to make it work?

Accepted Answer

You need nothing more than the enclosure and the usb cord that it comes with. The nice thing about this unit is that it has no screws and the case just slides to open and close. Has a blue light when connected and a red light when data is being transferred.

My computer found the device immediately and the data was available.

Question 2

I have a Fujitsu serial ata (sata) capacity 60g, RPM 5.4k, firmware 0085002a. It is 2.75" by 4". will this product work for me?

Accepted Answer

I'm thinking your measuring tape is not very exact. Going EXACTLY by what you SAY you measured, I'd say no, won't fit, because those measurements you took are rounded upwards. The real size is smaller than you say. You leave off the most important measurement of all, the thickness. In that measure we expect less than 9mm. If it is over 9mm, you may not be able to close the Orico cover. Even at 9mm, it is hard to slide the cover closed. Think this through carefully. Your legacy 60GB Fujitsu is only 8% of what the Orico can hold, 750GB. Then the discount on the Orico has to be considered. Why? Also consider that surplus RPM 5.4k laptop SATA drives are increasingly common to find because now one can upgrade to RPM 7.2k, or to SSD. Your Fujitsu might be worth gambling on an Orico. It is up to you.

Question 3

Does this product include a USB cable? If it doesn't, I'll need one,so what do you recommend for purchase of the cable...I'm assuming they are all the same, but want to make sure.

Accepted Answer

The Orico 2588us-bk does come with a short USB cable, about 12 inches long. I use several of these enclosures and I have found when the USB cable gets longer, data transfer or power becomes less reliable. I'm using this unit as delivered without any problems. I would not recommend trying to use a longer USB cable. I have never tried an active USB extender with a portable hard drive, but "Active USB Extenders" often make it just like plugging directly into the computer while giving you 10 to 15 feet of extra distance.

Question 4

Once i remove the hard drive from my old laptop and inster into enclosure.. am i able to pulg this into another laptop to transfer files or can i only plug into a desktop pc??

Accepted Answer

It can be plugged into your PC or laptop as long as there is a USB port available. Then you can transfer files from the new "Removable Drive" that should appear once you plug it in.

Question 5

I took a hard drive from a Gateway NV53 laptop. Will this case fit it? How do I check to be sure?

Accepted Answer

Yes, this case will fit the hard drive from your Gateway NV53. The way to be sure is to look up the specifications on that laptop and you'll see that Gateway NV53 uses uses 2.5" SATA hard drives which is exactly what this case is designed to hold.

Question 6

I need this for a college art class the professor said it canot have any moveable parts. does this item qualify ??

Accepted Answer

I'm not sure I understand the question, but hopefully this description will help. This is a two-piece hard drive enclosure. You provide your own hard drive. You plug your hard drive into the bottom piece and snap the top cover on. No screws or anything.

Question 8

Does this work with windows 8?

Accepted Answer

Cohen, I tried this on windows 8 machines and it appears to work just fine.

Question 9

Can this be used with a desktop to run a laptop hdd as an external hdd ?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely! That's how I use 3 of mine. As I get extra drives from old laptops or change them out when I upgrade my laptops to SSD drives, this is where they go.
They must be esata types, not the older IDE drives.
One of the many things I like about this enclosure is the single USB on the cable rather than the double USB plugs that some drives have. The cable is also fairly robust.
The price is certainly right.

Question 10

Can this be used with a desktop to run anlaptop hdd as an external hdd ?

Accepted Answer

The answer to your question is yes. I had two laptops that were no longer functional but the hard drives were okay. I order two of these enclosures and now use them to store data via usb on my desktop. They work great.
