So, how generic is this? Specifically, I'm trying to install 2.5" SAS HDD into a 3.5" tray in an HP Proliant GL185 sever. Think it'll work?

It is designed to go in a standard 3.5 inch HDD bay. It is the same size as a 3.5 in HDD (approx) but the installed 2.5 inch drive's data and power connectors are NOT at the same depth as a normal 3.5 drive would be. If you wanted to install this adapter in a server chassis drive caddy, with a 2.5 drive in it, I'm not sure the drive would actually plug into the controller port when you slide it in. In fact, since this caddy is designed to hold 2x 2.5 drive, I know it won't. Hope that helps.
