The drive will work fine in your PC. The drive is compatible with the SATA controller on your motherboard.

I believe my main drive is going to fail.  It is a Samsung 500 gb 7200 rpm 3.o gb/s drive.  I built my computer but have never had to replace a hard drive or restore an image.  If I replace the 500gb with a 1TB drive, will I be able to use my image to restore it?

Yeah, you should be able to use it. When you restore the image or do a drive to drive copy the original filesystem's size will be the same, so you will have to expand the filesystem to fill the newly available space otherwise you'll only be able to use half of it. There is a utility built into Windows 7 that can do it for you.

I want to add this internal hard drive to my old Dell E510 but I just want to know if anyone else with a Dell ever upgraded their own desktop with this type of internal hard drive?

who cares its a hard drive that works very fast.  You can install the dell boot partition and other dell tools.  you got SATA you like what you buy.

I'm planning to get 2 of these to install in an old PC that has an MSI K7N2 Delta 2 motherboard with 2 onboard SATA 1 connectors. I've read that most drives come with a switch that can be used to throttle back to the 1.5Gb speed. Can this drive do that?

I'm also planning to install NAS4Free on it as part of a DIY NAS project. Does anyone see an issue with this? As long as the motherboard can detect the drives, I should be able to get the NAS software running, right?

You do not have a switch on these. IMO I would purchase a newer Mother Board than you have due to IO speeds and other factors. For the gain VS price it is a no brain er.  Look in the Openbox and clearance for a box set if you need boar, CPU and ram.

Does this drive use advanced formatting?

According to available specs and data, this drive appears to have 512-byte sector configuration only, which is interesting because the general sense has been that all new hard drives in the last couple of years would have Advanced Formatting (4KB sectors) by default. Obviously a few exceptions remain.

What is the length of the SATA cable that is included in this drive kit?

I went ahead and purchased this retail drive kit although I could not find an answer to my question above. It does come with everything needed for a typical installation (SATA interface cable, power adapter cable and drive mounting screws). The cable lengths are as follows (end of plug to end of plug):
SATA Cable, 19.5-inches and
Power Adapter Cable, 6-inches (4-Pin Molex to SATA).

Is this compatible with the Mac OSX operating system?

It should be, because hard drives tend to be similar for all computers regardless of if they're Mac or PC. They don't have the compatability issues that driver-heavy hardware like graphics cards have.

According to the Seagate website your current drive is a parallel ATA (PATA) - connected usually with a wide, flat cable and a large connector.  The ST310005N1A1AS-RK is a serial ATA (SATA) drive - different cables (both data and power) and a different hard drive controller.  If your PC motherboard also supports SATA drives and you have an open SATA socket, and you have a power supply with a free/available SATA power connector, it should work just fine.  If you do not have a SATA port on the motherboard, you will need to acquire a SATA controller add-in card to use with the SATA drive - these are typically PCI or 1x PCIe cards (check for an available motherboard slot).  PATA-to-SATA power adapters use to ship with SATA drive but no longer (at least not with the drive I received). So if your current power supply does not have SATA connectors, you will also need to acquire such an adapter (very cheap).

what kind of adapter do i need to use this drive to replace Seagate ST3320620AS SCSI Hard Drive (this is what you see when you look up my drive on the computer in the device manager).  My unit is an old Dell Inspiron 531 that has no up-grades or replaced parts and I cannot find a replacement for the SCSI drive so I need to go to SATA?

Your current drive is NOT SCSI - that is the way it shows up in Windows device manager but that has been "wrong" since forever.  According to the Seagte site, you have an UltraATA/100 drive (wide, flat cable and a large connector).  You need to go to the Dell Support site and search for the owner's manual for your system.  That will tell you what device types are supported.  The Dell site requires a service tag or expresscode, so I was unable to check.  If the system does support SATA drives - questionable considering the drive model you provided - you would simply add a SATA drive cable and connect one of the availble SATA power connectors.  If it does not support SATA, you will need a SATA add-in card, cable, and quite possibly a SATA power adapter.  Again, check the Dell site for the specifics on your exact model.

Is this compatible with a QNAP TS-469L NAS?

I ordered this drive and they didn't have it in stock so they sent me something else that did not work. They did not replace the drive with the correct product and decided to refund my purchase. Of course, I got to pay for the shipping and have nothing to show for it.
