will it work with satellite 655?

Your main concern when getting a hard drive for your laptop is it’s interface. Since the Satellite 655 use SATA and you are planning to buy a SATA drive you shouldn’t have any problems. Another concern when buying hard drives is its capacity. There are some motherboards that their Firmware would not recognize the newer very large hard drives (let’s say 3TB or more) but this is not your case so you should be worry free buying this hard drive. Hello Eric.
First, let me say that this is a great hard drive. I'm very happy with mine. 
It was a simple install and it booted from my Windows 7 Ultimate CD with no problems.
I've been using it everyday since it was installed and again, absolutely no problems at all.
Now to answer your question... I recommend getting a 2.5 HHD enclosure  for your current hard drive.
What this enclosure does is, makes any 2.5 hard drive into a portable/external hard drive.
You will install your new hard drive into your laptop first, then put your old hard drive into the external enclosure. With the provided USB cable, you simply hook your old hard drive to your laptop's USP port. Then, you can copy and paste those files from the old hard drive to your new one.
Newegg sells several different styles of them. In many cases, they are less than $10 for a cheap one and run as high as $35-50 for nicer ones.
If you are only going to use it for file transfers, the cheaper ones work just fine.
Here is a link to one that is only $8.99. You can also search Newegg to see if there are others that you like better, or is more appropriate for your needs.
I believe it got 4 eggs out of 530 reviews...that's not bad.

It looks like it might. Your laptop comes standard with a 200 GB SATA 150 which should be compatible with this SATA drive. Keep in mind that this drive is faster, but you won't see the benefit since you are using a SATA 150 port to control it.
