Question 1

SanDisk PRO-G40 or Samsung T9 for a Thunderbolt laptop?

Accepted Answer

Choose the PRO-G40 if you can connect it over Thunderbolt 3: it is rated for up to 2,700MB/s read and 1,900MB/s write, and also falls back to USB 10Gbps. The T9 is rated for up to 2,000MB/s over USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, but reaching that speed requires a host and cable that support Gen 2x2. Check your laptop’s ports before choosing based on peak speed.

Question 2

Is the PRO-G40 worth upgrading to from a Samsung T7 Shield?

Accepted Answer

The upgrade is most useful if your computer supports Thunderbolt 3 and you regularly move large files: the PRO-G40 can reach much higher speeds over Thunderbolt than the T7 Shield’s USB 10Gbps connection. On a USB 10Gbps connection, the PRO-G40 is also rated around 1,000MB/s, so its speed advantage is limited there. The PRO-G40 has an IP68 rating; Samsung rates the T7 Shield IP65.

Question 3

PRO-G40 or SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD for a USB-C computer?

Accepted Answer

If your computer has Thunderbolt 3, the PRO-G40 is the better fit for high-speed transfers and offers IP68-rated dust and water resistance. If you will use USB only, compare the exact port standards: the PRO-G40’s USB mode is 10Gbps, while the Extreme PRO model with USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 is rated for up to 2,000MB/s and requires a compatible Gen 2x2 host to reach its top speed.

Question 4

Is 1TB enough storage for work or travel?

Accepted Answer

The drive provides 1TB of storage, which may suit carrying active projects, documents, and a selection of media files. Whether that is enough depends on file sizes and how much material you need available offline; large video libraries or ongoing archives may require more capacity.

Question 5

Will it work with a USB-C computer, or do I need Thunderbolt 3?

Accepted Answer

It supports both Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C, so a Thunderbolt 3 connection is not required for basic use. The drive can reach its advertised speeds of up to 2,700 MB/s read and 1,900 MB/s write over Thunderbolt 3; USB-C operation is listed at up to 10 Gbps, so actual transfer speeds depend on the host connection.

Question 6

Is this SSD suitable for travel and field work?

Accepted Answer

It is suited to portable work where durability matters: the product is rated IP68 for dust and water resistance, crush-resistant up to 4,000 lb, and designed to withstand drops up to 3 m. These ratings do not mean it should be submerged or exposed to impacts beyond its stated limits.

Question 7

Is this a good choice for moving large work files?

Accepted Answer

It is designed for fast transfers of large files, especially when connected through Thunderbolt 3, with listed maximum speeds of 2,700 MB/s read and 1,900 MB/s write. A compatible Thunderbolt 3 host is needed to access the highest stated performance; USB-C connections may be slower.

Question 8

Will it work as an external recording drive for a Lumix S5IIX?

Accepted Answer

Do not assume it will. A Reddit user reported that the camera did not recognize the PRO-G40. That is a user report, not a guarantee about every camera setup, so check the camera’s supported storage and connection requirements before buying it for recording.

Question 9

Is the PRO-G40 suitable for video editing?

Accepted Answer

It may suit editing workflows that benefit from Thunderbolt 3 transfer speeds. The listed maximum speeds require Thunderbolt 3; Reddit users also report mixed experiences, including one long-term editor who reported successful use and another who described connection and Finder problems. Keep a separate backup of active projects.

Question 10

Is it worth choosing over a Samsung T7 or T9?

Accepted Answer

It is a better fit when you can use Thunderbolt 3 and need faster transfers for large files. Reddit users discussing video editing note that a T7 may be sufficient for many projects, while the PRO-G40 offers higher stated speeds. The benefit depends on your computer, workload, and need for speed.
