Question 1

Should I get this 1TB FIPS-validated Aegis SSD or the Aegis Padlock 3.0?

Accepted Answer

Choose this FIPS-validated model when your organization or policy requires FIPS validation. Choose the Aegis Padlock 3.0 if that validation is not required: Apricorn describes it as offering the same security levels without the added cost of a FIPS-validated device.

Question 2

Should I choose this Level 2 model or the Aegis Fortress L3?

Accepted Answer

Choose this model if FIPS 140-2 Level 2 validation meets your requirements. Choose the Fortress L3 if your requirements call for Level 3 validation; Apricorn lists both products with USB 3.2 Gen 1 and SSD transfer rates up to roughly 350–370 MB/s, so the clearest distinction is the validation level rather than a large stated speed difference.

Question 3

Is this FIPS-validated Aegis SSD or the Aegis NVX a better fit?

Accepted Answer

Choose this model when FIPS 140-2 Level 2 validation is a requirement. Choose the Aegis NVX when transfer speed is the priority: Apricorn lists USB 10Gbps and speeds up to 1,000 MB/s for the NVX, compared with up to 350 MB/s for the Padlock SSD. Apricorn’s product comparison chart lists the NVX as not FIPS validated.

Question 4

Is this a good portable drive for work travel?

Accepted Answer

It is listed as a portable external SSD with 1 TB capacity and a USB 3.0 interface, so it can suit carrying and accessing work files. The provided specifications do not establish drop, water, or dust resistance, so do not treat it as a rugged drive.

Question 5

Is this drive suitable for carrying sensitive work files?

Accepted Answer

It is designed for portable storage and lists 256-bit AES-XTS encryption and FIPS 140-2 Level 2 validation, making it a fit for users who need encrypted external storage. The specifications provided do not state its authentication method or compatibility with particular security policies.

Question 6

Can I use it to back up work files?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Its 1 TB capacity and external USB 3.0 connection make it suitable for storing file backups. The amount it can hold depends on the size of your files, and the provided specifications do not describe backup software or automatic backup features.

Question 7

What is the maximum read and write transfer rate of this external solid state drive?

Accepted Answer

The maximum read transfer rate is 180 MB/s and the maximum write transfer rate is also 180 MB/s.

Question 8

What is the storage capacity of the 1TB FIPS VALIDATED AEGIS?

Accepted Answer

The storage capacity of the 1TB FIPS VALIDATED AEGIS is 1 TB.
